Project title:
Layman description:
Alzheimer鈥檚 disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases and causes of dementia. Alzheimer's is characterised by progressive degeneration of neurons in specific brain regions, leading to memory loss and behavioural changes. Despite significant progress, the reason behind some neurons being more affected by Alzheimer's than others is unknown. Presently, I am using a fruit fly model of Alzheimer's disease to investigate the mechanisms of this selective vulnerability. A better understanding of this phenomenon will aid in future drug development.

The Confocal Microscopy course at the University of York was a four-day intensive (32 hours) programme combining lectures on imaging theory and extensive hands-on training. Using samples ranging from plant tissue to live cells, I gained experience in several advanced techniques, such as FRET, FRAP, and spectral imaging with linear unmixing. We were introduced to both laser scanning and spinning disk confocal systems, including super-resolution imaging technology Airyscan 2. During the last session, we were encouraged to analyse our own samples, and discussed different strategies to optimise capturing speed and image quality.
