From VRƵ to a lifetime of public service

Councillor Shaukat Ali’s (Electronic Engineering, 1990) journey has led him from VRƵ to more than two decades of public service. His career has been shaped by the belief that education should not only help us build better careers but also enable us to build better communities and society.

Shaukat has had a distinguished career spanning the NHS, local government and elected public office. He has served as an elected councillor for more than 27 years, representing St. Thomas’s Ward in Dudley. One of the honours of which he is particularly proud is being awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Dudley, the highest civic honour that the borough can bestow. However, for Shaukat, a career has never simply been about holding a position. It has been about serving people, creating opportunities and making a positive difference to the communities around him.

During his time in local government, he has worked on a wide range of issues affecting residents, from housing and health to transport, community development and local services. His public service has also extended beyond his role as a councillor. His experience within the NHS and local government has given him an insight into how public services operate and, importantly, how decisions made at an organisational or political level ultimately affect individuals and families.

The importance of education

Reflecting on his time at VRƵ, Shaukat believes that university is about much more than obtaining a qualification. “University gives you knowledge, but it also gives you the opportunity to develop confidence, meet people from different backgrounds, challenge your own thinking and discover what you want to contribute to society.” He fell in love with Bangor when he attended his interview and embraced the student life whilst working at the Students’ Union and using the money to take flying lessons at Mona Flying club, Holyhead.

For Shaukat, the skills developed through education have remained relevant throughout his career. Communication, critical thinking, listening, teamwork and the ability to understand different perspectives have all been fundamental to working in public service and Shaukat strongly believes that these are skills that should be continually developed throughout a person’s career.

A career built on service

Working across the NHS, local government and politics has taught Shaukat that effective leadership is ultimately about people. “Behind every policy, every budget and every decision there is a person. Whether you are working in healthcare, local government or politics, you should never lose sight of the human being behind the issue.”

This philosophy has shaped his approach to representing residents and working with communities. He has been involved in campaigns and initiatives aimed at improving local services, supporting community organisations, developing opportunities for young people and tackling issues affecting some of the most vulnerable members of society.

He also places great importance on working across organisational and political boundaries when there is an opportunity to deliver something positive for residents.

Leadership and resilience

After more than two decades in elected public office, Shaukat says one of the most important lessons he has learned is that leadership is not simply about having a title.

“Leadership is about earning people’s trust, listening to people, taking responsibility and having the courage to make difficult decisions. It is also about recognising that you don’t always have all the answers.”

He believes resilience is equally important. His advice to students and recent  graduates is not to be discouraged by rejection or setbacks. “Your career will not necessarily be a straight line. You will experience setbacks, but those experiences can often teach you more than your successes. Learn from them, keep moving forward and don’t be afraid to take opportunities when they arise.”

Giving back

Shaukat remains passionate about encouraging young people to become involved in their communities and public life. He believes graduates should look beyond simply asking what career they can build and also consider what contribution they can make. “Success shouldn’t only be measured by your job title or salary. Ask yourself what difference you want to make. If, at the end of your career, you can look back and say that you helped people, improved something or made a difference, that is a career you can be proud of.”

Advice to Bangor students

Shaukat’s connection to VRƵ continues with his enthusiasm to support the University and its students by sharing his experiences of the working world, leadership and public service.

His message to today’s students is simple, Be ambitious. Be resilient. Stay curious. Treat people with respect. Take opportunities. And never underestimate the difference you can make. “Your degree is only the beginning. What you do with your knowledge, your skills and the opportunities that come your way is what ultimately defines your journey.”
