Are there compelling reasons for gender pay differences that go beyond discrimination alone? What role do structural barriers versus personal choices play in perpetuating these disparities? While the UK's overall gap has narrowed to 7% in 2024, significant differences persist across sectors. Some argue valid explanations exist - work-life balance choices, sector preferences, flexibility needs, and dangerous role acceptance. Others highlight ongoing discrimination, unpaid care burdens, and workplace sexism. This session examines competing perspectives through concepts like "glass ceiling," "sticky floors," and "leaky pipeline," challenging students to critically analyse whether apparent progress masks deeper structural inequalities.
