Patterns of Good Fortune: Exploring Chinese Culture Through Paper Cutting!
Our Chinese Culture Lunch Club is back! We enjoyed a creative lunchtime exploring the stories and traditions behind Chinese paper cutting and sharing the pleasure of making something by hand.
The workshop placed the art and symbolism of Chinese paper cutting at its heart. Traditionally used to decorate homes during festivals and celebrations, these delicate designs express wishes for happiness, prosperity and family wellbeing. Flowers, animals and auspicious symbols reveal how creativity connects with Chinese customs and values.
The session also explored the relationship between Chinese language and visual culture. 绂 (蹿煤), meaning good fortune or blessing, provided a starting point for understanding how a paper-cut design can convey a wish, bringing language, symbolism and tradition together.
Guided folding and cutting brought these cultural themes to life, showing how simple techniques can transform paper into meaningful artwork. The process offered a relaxing opportunity to explore pattern, shape and composition while discovering the stories behind the designs.
We loved sharing this beautiful tradition with our local community, bringing Chinese culture to life through creativity and the stories behind each design.
Join us next time! Whether you are curious about Chinese traditions, keen to explore the language or simply looking for a creative lunchtime break, our Chinese Culture Lunch Club offers a welcoming space to learn, make and connect. We look forward to seeing you!
