For ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ PhD student Claire Lober, a passion for medieval Welsh literature has opened doors far beyond North Wales.
Originally from Ohio, Claire moved to Bangor four years ago to pursue a PhD in Celtic Studies within the School of Welsh. Her research explores medieval Welsh prophecy as a form of historical writing, inspired by a long-standing fascination with the legendary figure of Myrddin (Merlin) and his role in shaping perceptions of Wales's past.
Beyond her research, Claire has immersed herself in Welsh language and culture, studying both modern and medieval Welsh and exploring the landscapes, castles, and communities that feature in the manuscripts she studies.
With support from the Wartski International Travel Bursary, Claire travelled to Nova Scotia, Canada, to present her research at the 2026 Celtic Studies Association of North America (CSANA) Conference. The bursary enabled her to share her work with leading scholars in medieval Welsh literature and engage with the latest developments across the wider field of Celtic Studies.
The conference enabled Claire to build international connections and explore new perspectives on minority languages and Celtic scholarship. She was subsequently invited to join the CSANA Board as Social Media Manager, a role that has allowed her to strengthen links between ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, North Wales, and academics across North America.

The Wartski Fund enabled me to take part in an international conference and present my research to leading experts in Celtic Studies. Because of this fund, I was able to have in-depth discussions with fellow students and academics from around the world. This has had a huge impact on my work and would not have been possible without this award.
This opportunity was made possible through the Wartski Trust, established in honour of Winifred and Isidore Wartski. Their legacy continues to create opportunities for ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ students, enabling them to share their expertise on the global stage and build connections that enrich both their academic journeys and the wider University community.
