REVIEWS OF PERFORMANCES OF FRENCH SOLO PIANO MUSIC
听
Cesar Franck: Prelude Choral et Fugue -听his playing had breadth and power and succeeded in bringing to the contrapuntal arguments a flair and a sense of instinctively realised keyboard colour which reinforced both the music鈥檚 strength and its detailed effect.听Wigmore Hall, London (Daily Telegraph)
听
Gabriel Faur茅: Theme and Variations听Op.73 -听the power and clean-cut precision of his playing brought out by sparing and beautifully-judged pedalling had all the more impact for being so regularly set against daringly gentle pianissimos of jewelled clarity.听Wigmore Hall, London (The Guardian)
听
Maurice Ravel: Sonatine听- the lovely liquidity of sounds which characterises Iwan Llewelyn- Jones鈥檚 approach to French music flowed abundantly with some delightful coloristic effects.听St听David鈥檚 Hall, Cardiff听(Musical Opinion)
听
Olivier Messiaen: Le baiser de l鈥橢nfant-J茅sus听-听a continuously sustained concentration of outstanding technique and thought.听听
Ravel: Scarbo听(Gaspard de la nuit)听-听an impressive command of the keyboard, from a fine feathering of the fingers in crossover hands to a sinister sonority of chords.听Wigmore Hall, London (The Times)
听
Henri Dutilleux: Sonate -听is a much darker work and the first of the evening to demonstrate a level of virtuosity by Llewelyn-Jones that was jaw dropping.听(Aberdeen Evening Express)
