Risk Management at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ
³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ is committed to managing risk responsibly and transparently in support of its academic mission, long‑term sustainability, and wider civic role. Effective risk management helps us protect our students, staff, partners and reputation, while enabling innovation and informed decision-making across the University.
We understand risk as both a threat and an opportunity, recognising that some level of risk is inherent in delivering teaching, research and public engagement. Our approach ensures that risks are identified early, assessed consistently and managed proportionately, so that opportunities can be pursued with confidence and potential adverse impacts are minimised.
Risk management at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ is embedded within everyday planning and decision-making. Strategic and operational risks are monitored through a structured framework that links local risks within Colleges and Professional Services to a University‑wide Corporate Strategic Risk Register. This enables the University to maintain oversight of the most significant risks to its objectives, while ensuring that risks are managed at the appropriate level.
Strong governance underpins this framework. The University Council holds ultimate responsibility for risk management, supported by the Audit & Risk Committee, the Executive Board, and specialist oversight through the Risk Assurance Panel. Together, these bodies provide assurance that risks are being actively managed, controls are effective, and emerging issues are identified and addressed.
Our approach is aligned with UK higher education governance standards and regulatory expectations, and is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains robust, proportionate and fit for purpose. Through this framework, ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ seeks not only to reduce uncertainty, but also to foster a resilient, well governed institution that can thrive in a changing environment.
